What do I need to know?

A Neighbourhood Safer Place (NSP) is a place of last resort during a bushfire emergency. It should only be used if you cannot safely leave the area or you cannot get to the places in your bushfire plan.

Travelling to or sheltering at a NSP does not guarantee your safety. Leaving early is the safest option.

What should I expect if I go there during a bushfire?

NSPs are open spaces like sports fields, with minimal vegetation and buildings.

Keep in mind:

  • You may be affected by heat, smoke and embers.
  • Facilities are limited. Water, toilets and shelter may not be available.
  • Emergency services may not be present.

Is a Neighbourhood Safer Place the same as an evacuation centre?

No, they have different purposes:

  • A NSP has limited or no facilities, and is used only when people cannot leave the area.
  • An evacuation centre is a managed place that may have food, water, bedding, and support services. If one is opened during a bushfire, its location will be chosen based on local conditions.

How can I prepare?

Know where your nearest NSP is and how to get there, and have alternate routes in case roads are blocked or too dangerous to drive on.

What do I bring if I need to use a Neighbourhood Safer Place?

Only bring essential items with you. It’s a good idea to prepare a go-bag at the start of each bushfire season and keep it somewhere easy to find.

Your go-bag should include medications, water, P2 face masks, and protective clothing.

Can I bring my pet to a NSP?

NSPs are not designed for pets, so include your pet in your bushfire plan and leave early with them if you can.

If you and your pet need to use a NSP, they must be kept on a lead or in a carrier at all times.

Keep in mind:

  • NSPs have limited or no shelter.
  • Water may not be available.
  • Your pet may be affected by heat, smoke and embers.
  • These conditions may be stressful for your pet.

Have a plan for your pet before bushfire season starts, including what you need to take and where they can go.
